Boat Provisioning

We usually head off on the boat for a few weeks in January. I’m always a bit confused about what to stock the boat with and seem to forget what I did last year. So in the spirit of our now annual note about what we did for Christmas, here is my what we did for boating list plus a few tips and tricks.

This year for the first time I took my new Thermomix. It was fantastic and made for some much more adventurous cooking. We had some good fish hauls so I had to go a bit deeper on the fish recipes and came up with some bangers. I usually do my main boat stock up via a New World delivery order. You can get this delivered to home, but it’s worth knowing that New World KeriKeri delivers to Opua Marina a few times a week and this year we also got a delivery to Sandspit Marina where we were for a few days. One of the great things about this is you can look at last year’s order and add it back to the trolley as a starter for this summer. It’s also good at the end of summer to pull most of the food off the boat and use it up at home so you don’t end up with stale biscuits and chips. Some other tips are:

  • Scales fluctuate on water so make sure you’ve got measuring cups and spoons.

  • If you’re organised it’s great to pre-measure dry ingredients for recipes. I’m not that organised usually but I do make up a couple of spice mixes (like for my Indian Butter Chicken).

  • I did have a loose idea of what meals I was going to cook. We bought a small ham which was great for sandwiches and snacks. We have a toasted sandwich maker on board which gets alot of use.

  • It’s good to have plenty of containers for left overs. Zip lock bags are also a must for fish.

  • Wraps last well and are good if you run out of bread. You can also make quesadilla for a change.

Meals & Recipes

Thermomix recipes

Here are some of the Thermomix recipes I had on repeat. It was great having it also as it’s tight to fit two pots on our cooktop so it gave me more space there.

Other boat friendly meals

These are some other recpies that worked well.

  • Smashburgers - I used the brioche burger buns for these when I ran out.

  • Fish burgers - delicious with the brioche buns.

  • Thai red fish curry - total winner.

  • Fresh fried fish on top of the rissotto above

  • Fish sliders - need lots of slider buns!

  • Risoni salad with steak and roumoulade sauce - great when getting short on ingredients.
